Houston to Decriminalize Some Low Level Marijuana Possession

Though Marijuana possession is illegal federally and statewide in Texas, Harris County (which includes Houston and the surrounding area) is making moves to decriminalize low-level possession of marijuana. Officials have said throwing people in jail for small amounts of Marijuana “has no tangible public safety benefits”; further, Harris County has spent an average of $20 million per year over the last 10 years on misdemeanor marijuana possession cases, stretching already strained finances. While cases are still up to discretion of the individual officers involved, for the most part, first offenders will only have to complete a four hour course on decision making - leaving them with a clean criminal record.
